Just got back from L.A. for a very special occasion…a fan screening of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The Hellebration, of course! Hellboy may not be your cup of tea, but I am very fond of the comic book — Mike Mignola’s mastery of shadowy surrealism combined with elements of H.P. Lovecraft, pulp fiction, gothic monsters and smash ‘em up action hooked me from issue #1. If you have yet to hit up Hellboy, now is your chance to get in on the action. Guillermo del Toro, with loving care and serious cinematic chops, has taken the character into a new dimension much more accessible to the general public. Besides, what’s not to like about a cigar-chomping, recovering Beast of the Apocalypse who loves kittens and The Three Stooges?
So, yes, I had a chance to see the new flick before the nation-wide release next week. It was incredible, from start to finish. And I got to meet Mike and Guillermo, two of my favorite creatives working today. Great guys, the both of them. That would have been plenty for me. However, I also had the chance to hang out with a great crew of fellow fans and freaks who totally dig this kind of art. Sometimes it’s nice to know that there are a lot more of us out there than it seems when I’m reading a comic all by my lonesome.
